The Importance Of Organic Coffee

Did you know 50 percent of Millennials and 54 percent of Gen Z prefer to purchase sustainable products and services, such as organic coffee, even at a higher price point?

As more Millennials and Gen Z make their way into the work force and contribute to the economy, the buying power that these groups hold continues to increase. Along with the rising popularity of organic, sustainability, fair trade, and ethically sourced products, more consumers are educating themselves on what their purchases mean from a larger, more global perspective.

At Joffrey’s, we are aware of this trend and we are actively working to continuousy source coffee that fit this mold. We currently offer a line of USDA & Fair Trade Certified organic coffee within our Café Femenino® Collection. Café Femenino® is a coffee brand on a mission to enhance the lives of women coffee growers and farmers to ensure they are valued, supported, and paid premiums for their coffee.

The Café Femenino coffee program is committed to:

  • ending the cycle of poverty afflicting women coffee farmers across the world.
  • providing direct compensation to women farmers.
  • providing resources to enact positive change in their communities.

The programs worldwide make it possible for women farmers to receive legal rights, hold leadership positions and have financial/business decision making power over their coffee.

We offer a variety of options, all sourced from various countries and cooperatives that participate in the program and available in whole bean & fractional packs.

Father's Day with Joffrey's

Whether near or far, celebrate with caffeinated moments this Father’s Day.

To celebrate all fathers and father-figures, we’ve put together a Father’s Day Gift Guide filled with the perfect go-to caffeinated gifts and information on coffee Dad will love.

Many coffee drinkers (even Dad!) are unaware of Colombia’s coffee producing history. For many years, many commercial coffee brands had blends that consisted primarily of Robusta beans, while Colombia was solely producing Arabica beans, making it one of the most specialized and sought-after growing regions. Colombian coffee is known to be one of the “richest” coffee in the world.

It is now the second largest producer of Arabica coffee in the world and because of this they have founded a government program (F.N.C. – Federation Nacional de Cafeteros) to help support coffee producers and oversee quality and exporting within the country. Colombia has had its fair share of farming challenges as a result of a common coffee leaf rust called “Roya”, but has since adapted with disease resistant trees with help from the F.N.C. This showcases how resilient this growing region is and the dedication the country has to growing superior coffee.

Because of Colombia’s rich growing history and superior beans, we have sourced a special coffee from Colombia this year. This single origin, medium roasted coffee comes from a microlot, a very small area of a farm producing above average quality beans, on the Ever Chavez Farm in Nariño, Colombia. This is a Caturra coffee varietal, grown at 2,100 ft. altitude, delivering an intriguing aroma with a well-balanced acidity, and delicate notes of apricot, grape & orange.

Try Something New: Cupping Notes vs. Flavored Coffee

When it comes to a cup of coffee, flavors often extend past the coffee itself. However, some of these flavors may not be detectable by the average coffee drinker. This marks the distinction between tasting or “cupping” notes and flavored coffee.

At Joffrey’s, our roastmasters “cup” our coffees daily to ensure quality and uniformity across all of our offerings. Cupping is the process in use by coffee producers and buyers around the world to check the quality of the coffee, and also distinguish the tastes and differences between various beans and countries of origin.

Join Chris and Miguel for a cupping session!

Cupping sessions allow our roastmasters to identify various “notes” within a coffee – such as hints of chocolate, citrus, fruit or nuts. Much like how wine and beer’s tasting notes are based on where the grapes are grown and how the beer is brewed – the same goes for coffee. Coffee’s flavor notes depend on the type of bean, where it is grown and how it is roasted.

However, while these are flavors, for most coffee drinkers it is not a flavor you will experience in the average cup of coffee and should not be confused with flavored coffees. Tasting notes are subtle and don’t often take away from the classic coffee taste, but add to it (such as the nutty flavor and chocolate undertones of our Victoria & Albert’s). On the other side, flavored coffees are beans coated in flavor oils after roasting to give the coffee a flavor that is not already present (such as our Jamaican Me Crazy® flavored coffee).

Looking to try some of our coffees with unique tasting notes? We’ve gathered some of our favorites below, featuring some of our Fair Trade Certified coffees to celebrate Fair Trade Awareness Day!

The company works with several local charities such as Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Make a Wish Southern Florida and military charity Task Force Dagger Foundation and Folds of Honor. Celebrating Earth Day: Peru Alto Mayo

This month, we are celebrating National Earth Day! We would like to put a well-deserved spotlight on our Peru Alto Mayo. This coffee is available to purchase by the bag at our Disney Springs store. To celebrate this day, we will also have this coffee available to purchase by the cup for the month of April! Join us in our efforts to support this wonderful cause!

Saving Land, Changing Lives
Joffrey’s is proud to align with Disney and Conservation International to support the protection of one of our favorite growing regions, Alto Mayo in San Martin, Peru. The ecosystem of Alto Mayo plays a critical role in the survival of Peru’s widespread fauna and flora, and with the Alto Mayo Protected Forest project, we can help keep it alive. To support these coffee farmers, we source this single origin coffee to promote sustainable, environmentally friendly farming practices in Peru.

How Does Sustainably Grown Coffee Help?

  • Replenishes nutrients to the soil, producing better beans and better tasting coffee.
  • Pays families more and provides access to new benefits and technologies, such as cooking stoves.
  • Rehabilitates farms that have been destroyed by Roya, a fungus that destroys coffee farms and financially devastates the families that live and work on them.
  • Helps families that farm shrimp, rice, cocoa, and tea too.

Planet Perks

  • Benefits the Earth entirely.
  • Has generated over 6 million tons of emissions reductions.
    • This is like removing over 1 million cars from the roads for an entire year.

When you buy this coffee online or purchase a cup of this coffee at select restaurants at Walt Disney World® Resort and Disneyland® Resort, you’re not just buying a memorable beverage; you’re helping improve the lives of families that call this region home.

Peru Alto Mayo | Origin Travels

For decades, the Amazon forest has been shrinking due to farmers cutting it down for new crop space, otherwise known as clearcutting. Although the production of new crops is on the upswing, this type of non-sustainable farming practice contributes greatly to deforestation. Eventually, this could mean an overall quality reduction and yield of crops as clearcutting continues. The San Martin area is particularly in critical danger, but the Alto Mayo Protected Forest project seeks to change all of this.

To support coffee farmers who participate in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest project, we sourced a single origin coffee to promote sustainable, environmentally friendly farming practices in Peru. Before you try a cup, you should know about the impact you’re helping us make just by drinking it.

Growing more fair-trade coffee is a wonderful thing, but the gallant story behind this project is that it impacts the lives of the producers in an incredible way. In return for using sustainable coffee farming methods, families are not only being paid more, but they’re receiving access to certain benefits and technologies that they didn’t have before (cooking stoves are just one example). Sustainable coffee farming also replenishes nutrients to the soil to keep it healthy and rich. Rich soil produces better beans and better tasting coffee. Would you want anything less in your coffee? The project also rehabilitates family farms that have been destroyed by Roya, a fungus that devastates coffee farms and financially devastates the families that live and work on them.

Our Roastmaster, Chris de Mezzo, explored the Alto Mayo Region, and witnessed the difference the project has made on coffee and the environment. This trip, however, was something special. It was the 31stanniversary of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest project. And what better way to begin the celebration than by a cupping of the region’s best coffee?

Chris’s first stop in the Alto Mayo Region was to the cupping lab Riojas, where he cupped coffee sourced by local farms of the Alto Mayo Region. “Every year in the 4 years I have made this trip, the coffee keeps improving.  this is no easy task to accomplish given all the variables that can really make farming in this region more difficult than it already is. We can see that sustainable farming is really making a difference for them. Soil quality, shade management, strict process guidelines, and great attention to detail is being followed from start to finish on every farm,” sated Chris. Chris went on to exclaim, “It is no surprise to us now as to why the coffee keeps improving each year, and why people who try this coffee enjoy it so much.” His next stop was to the Aquas Verde farm. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, even Chris was amazed by the care and dedication the farmers implemented. Farmers Xisto Vazquez and Edward Wibin Fernandez greeted him with open arms, and couldn’t be more excited to show off their work. “As they should have been,” Stated Chris. The trees were adequately shaded, evenly spaced, and were bearing healthy cherries. “It’s what every roaster who comes to visit wants to see,” exclaimed Chris.

Xisto and Edward took extreme detail with each step of the farming process. They showed Chris each intricacy of their caretaking, and even broke out the Refractometer that reads the level of sugar in a coffee cherry, which determines the correct time-frame to pick the cherries. “These guys have it down to science. Literally,” Stated Chris.

A new surprise to Chris was Edward’s use of a carved-out log for the fermentation (hyperlink to Sumatra blog) of his cherries. Chris was impressed with Edwards ingenuity as he was using a hollowed-out log to ferment & wash his coffee in. “Not only are they doing everything in their power to produce great coffee, but they are a resourceful bunch of farmers as well,” said Chris.

It’s no surprise with the amount of care the farmers put in, that they get out spectacular coffee.  Joffrey’s is proud to show off the hard work and dedication of the Alto Mayo farmers by bringing you a genuine taste of the region. Our Peru Alto Mayo roastis 100% USDA Organic and Fair Trade certified, with deep chocolate notes and fresh vanilla almond aroma. What better way to support a great cause, than with this stunning coffee?

Starting August 20th, Disney Organic Peru Alto Mayo (11oz) is available online at Joffreys.com, Joffrey’s Disney Springs Location, and soon available in select grocery stores nationwide. Look for it at a store near you.

Cup with a Cause - Peru Cafe Femenino

Grown and cultivated by the women of Café Femenino, artfully roasted by Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Co; where every cup sold makes a difference.

Café Femenino is named in honor of the 464 courageous women coffee farmers in Peru who began Café Femenino in 2003 with a determination and desire for a better future.   The 464 female coffee producers in Peru united and decided to separate their coffee production to create lots cultivated and harvested solely by this impoverished co-op of women.  It is produced organically along the slopes of the Andes Mountains in Peru with no pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Their goal was to seek visibility and a voice inside their community to better their lives.  These women participate in selling the coffee and making decisions on how the money from coffee sales will be used. Organic and Fair Trade premiums have facilitated progress in a number of rural coffee growing communities, including improvements in schools, health, nutritional education and human rights awareness.

But this improvement isn’t happening alone, the women growers efforts are made possible through importers. Roasters like Joffrey’s and retailers, as well as other members of the coffee community.

Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea Co. contributes a portion of every pound of coffee purchased to Café Femenino.  This contribution goes directly back to worthy projects and programs that enhance the lives of women and their families in the Café Femenino communities.
