If you’re a Floridian like us, then you know that the summers are hot…really…really, hot. For those of you that are not, chances are you still experience some heat during the Summer months as well and sometimes hot coffee just won’t do. What if we told you that same bag of Joffrey’s coffee you’ve been enjoying can be turned into something cold, refreshing, and just as tasty? This is not just a standard “How-to Cold Brew Blog,” but instead, we want to show you how to transform what you already have and love.
Cold Brew is simply a brewing method using water at room temperature or cooler temperatures, brewed for an extended period. For example, instead of brewing over the course of 4 minutes using hot water (like hot coffee), we will brew over the course of 18 hours in the refrigerator. We know, it sounds like a lot of work! So why would one want to do this?
When brewing at different temperatures, flavor profiles naturally vary. Therefore, by using the same coffee and brewing it at different temperatures and duration, we could potentially end up with something entirely unique. Typically, when cold brewing, we will end up with a coffee that is less bitter, smoother, and enhanced with faint flavors you may not normally taste when the coffee is hot. Not only is this enjoyable, but this also shows the versatility of your coffee.
So now let’s take this method and use it to make cold brew our Head Roastmaster’s favorite way, a French press.
What You Will Need:
1: French Press
2: Bag (ground for French press) of Joffrey’s coffee – we’re using one of our favorite flavors: Coconut Cream
1. Take the coffee grounds and insert them into the French Press.’
For a 3-cup French press, you’re going to want to use 2 ounces (4 table spoons) of coffee grounds and 10 ounces of water.
For an 8-cup, use about 5 and a half ounces (11 table spoons) of coffee grounds and 30 ounces of water.
2. Fill your French press with the prescribed amount of water (make sure water temperature is room temperature or cool).
3. Place the French press in the fridge for 14-24 hours and take a load off, because we’ve got a lot of time to burn before it’s ready to drink.
Make sure to cover the French Press with Saran wrap. This captures the coffee’s aroma and ensures the coffee does not pick up scent from any other food or ingredient in your fridge.
4. Remove the French press from the fridge and plunge away!
