A (Coffee) Day In The Life: Episode 4

Another day, another cup of coffee! Ever wondered how our Head Roastmaster Chris enjoys his coffee throughout the day?

Join us for our fourth installment of a (coffee) day in the life of Roastmaster Chris and join him as he makes his way through the day, one cup of coffee at a time! Today, we’ll be joining Chris as he makes himself a cup of coffee using a Chemex.

It’s recommended to store your coffee in an airtight container, such as our Airscape® Coffee Storage Canister. This stainless steel canister will preserve your Joffrey’s artisan roasts by keeping air out to protect freshness and flavor.

After grinding down his coffee fresh, Roastmaster Chris enjoys making another cup of coffee using one of his other favorite brewing methods, the Chemex method.

Not familiar with the Chemex method or looking for some new tips and tricks? Join Roastmaster Chris for a step by step tutorial!
  • Start with about 1.5 ounces (can add more/less to taste) of your favorite freshly ground Joffrey’s coffee, filling the cone filter about 3/4 of the way up
  • Wet grounds by slowly pouring water over them, allowing the extraction process to begin and the crust to form
    • Always use water that is no hotter than 200 degrees
    • Never use boiling water to brew coffee. Ideally, the water should be around 200 degrees (boiling water will usually reach this temperature after resting for two minutes).
  • Once a crust starts forming, pause and let it settle
  • Once the grounds have settled, slowly begin pouring the rest of the water over the grounds to slowly break the crust
  • Sit back, relax and enjoy your delicious Joffrey’s coffee!
Stay tuned for Roastmaster Chris’s next installment of a (coffee) day in the life!

A (Coffee) Day In The Life: The Pour Over

Ever wondered how our Head Roastmaster Chris enjoys his coffee throughout the day?

Join us for our third installment of a (coffee) day in the life of Roastmaster Chris and join him as he makes his way through the day, one cup of coffee at a time! Today, we’ll be joining Chris as he makes himself a cup of Pour Over coffee.

If you have been following this series, you may now know that it is important to always brew your coffee with fresh coffee. Roastmaster Chris prefers to start with whole bean, but regardless of your grind preference, it’s recommended to store your coffee in an airtight container, such as our Airscape® Coffee Storage Canister. This stainless steel canister will preserve your Joffrey’s artisan roasts by keeping air out to protect freshness and flavor.

His favorite coffees to brew using this method are our Origin Kenya and Origin Costa Rica.

After grinding down his fresh coffee, Roastmaster Chris enjoys making a cup of coffee using another one of his favorite brewing methods, the Pour Over method.

Not familiar with the Pour Over method or looking for some new tips and tricks? Join Roastmaster Chris for a step by step tutorial!

  • Take 2 ounces of freshly ground coffee and pour into the cone filter
  • Bring water to boil then set aside for two minutes
    • Never use boiling water to brew coffee. Ideally, the water should be around 200 degrees (boiling water will usually reach this temperature after resting for two minutes).
  • Slowly pour the water over the coffee grounds, stopping once you are 3/4 of the way to the top
    • As you pour the water over the grounds, a crust will form. The crust is the the hot water reacting to the freshly ground coffee.
  • Once the crust forms, use the remaining water from the kettle to break the crust
  • Ensure all grounds are saturated with water
  • Once all the coffee has dripped into your container below, the coffee is ready to be poured and served!

Fun Fact: If you’re brewing a dark roast, use cooler water (around the 190 degree mark), if using a medium roast, use hot water (around the 200 degree mark). This helps to highlight the unique flavor notes in your cup.

Stay tuned for Roastmaster Chris’s next installment of a (coffee) day in the life!

Make Espresso At Home | AeroPress

We’ve shared some of the most popular and classic brewing tools, such as the French Press and the Pour Over. But did you know there is a way to enjoy coffee that is so new it wasn’t even around in the 1990’s? Not to mention, it can actually produce a coffee that is reminiscent of espresso with the method we outline below!

The tool? The AeroPress!

Fun Facts About The AeroPress:
  • The AeroPress was debuted at a coffee trade show in late 2005
  • The AeroPress was invented by a Stanford Professor and inventor who was frustrated that there was no easy way to brew a single cup of coffee
  • The inventor’s biggest hit before the AeroPress was a frisbee

Learn how to brew an espresso-like beverage using this process below.

What You Need:
The Process:
  • Weigh out 17-21 grams of ground coffee
  • Bring 200 grams of water to a boil
  • Remove cap
  • Insert paper filter into the cap
  • Pour hot water slowly over the filter, to rinse it and allow it to adhere to the cap
  • Assemble the AeroPress (make sure it is completely dry) and place on the scale with the numbers upside down
  • Add your fine coffee grounds
  • Pour 34 grams of hot water(double the amount of water to coffee), making sure the coffee is completely saturated
  • Stir coffee grounds
  • Use remainder of hot water to fill the chamber
  • Wait 1 minute for grounds to steep
  • Get ready to press down hard to push the water through the coffee.*
  • Fasten the cap, flip over, place over your mug
  • Enjoy!

*This step is key! Pushing down rapidly and forcefully will ensure your result is an espresso-like beverage.
